The first game for several weeks saw Ipswich take the long journey to North Walsham. It was interesting to see if the journey would impact their performance, but after looking sharp in the warm up the lads scored in the first few minutes, after stringing together multiple phases.
This was a good sign and we looked like scoring every time we touched the ball; the forwards were excelling in the rucks and were on the front foot from the start. Once the ball was released to the backs, quick feet and slick passing had the boys comfortably in front 15-0 after only 10 minutes.
A raft of substitutions were then made with many players trying out new positions and developing new partnerships. This did not stop the lads flow and they ran in another 4 tries before the half time whistle.
Half time North Walsham 0 – Ipswich 35
The half time chat was basically more of the same – and straight from our kick-off the ball was gathered, and Ipswich opened the second half scoring. Another try followed shortly after to take the score to 45 – 0 in our favour.
North Walsham kept battling and scored a try that their determination and commitment deserved, they also had a very physical forward pack that troubled our lads in the scrum, something to work on. More substitutions were made during the second half which again had the boys testing themselves in unfamiliar positions. Backs became forwards and forwards became backs.
Credit to the all-round skill set that this group possess, you would not have noticed that many were playing out of position and a further 2 tries were scored before the final whistle as Ipswich remained camped in the North Walsham half for the remainder of the match.
Final score North Walsham 5 – Ipswich 55
Again, the coaches could not have asked for more commitment from the lads and there certainly was an abundance of skill displayed on the day.
In the absence of the MoM vote, a special mention goes to Isaac ‘Owen Farrell’ Bolton-Smith for his grubber kick and to Gethin ‘Liam Williams’ Harries for his control and pick up for the try of the match.
Also, we hope that Alex recovers from his shoulder injury, we would like to see you back on the field soon.
