The first game post Christmas and New Year saw the visit of Colchester to HDL. The coaches were half expecting there to be a few cobwebs and Haribo’s to be blown out, but much to their delight the whole squad performed brilliantly.
The game was again a 4-quarter affair and from early on Ipswich were on the front foot playing with aggression in the forwards, winning the contact and getting over the gain line. This was sucking in the Colchester defence and enabled the backs to score some great tries. At the end of the first quarter Ipswich were 25-0 up.
The squad was completely rotated for the next quarter and the boys who came on settled straight in and continued to pressure the Colchester defence. Again, strong forward surges created holes in the defensive line to exploit, which they did on a further two occasions to bring the half to an end.
Half time Ipswich 35 – Colchester 0
Another complete reshuffle at half time had Ipswich start with another combination of backs and forwards. This didn’t seem to influence the play in any way, the rucking and ball carrying was aggressive and the ball handling excellent in the windy conditions. 2 more tries were added in this period.
The Colchester boys were starting to tire in the final quarter, but never gave in. However, spaces were now opening up more often and this allowed the Ipswich boys to run in 4 more tries, again the passing moves were a joy to watch in such blustery conditions.
Final score Ipswich 65 – Colchester 0
The coaches were delighted with the performance of all of the squad. To keep another clean sheet is a testament to their determination and teamwork.
Well done to Josh Clarke who was the coaches ‘Golden Scrum Cap’ winner and to George who was nominated by Colchester as their MOTM.
