Great Strength In Depth

The full squad visited Cambridge for a match to be split into 4 quarters. The Gold team started the first quarter at a great pace with the forwards ferocious in securing quick ball and providing a strong, dominant scrum. The backs enjoyed the quick ball and scored some brilliant tries after free flowing passing moves. Cambridge battled hard but could not prevent Ipswich racing in to a 20-0 lead as the whistle blew to end the first quarter. Cambridge rotated their squad for the second quarter, whilst Ipswich left the Gold team on to complete the half… or so we thought!

Ipswich continued to dominate and scored 2 more tries to take the score to 30-0, then the referee asked to swap our sides to try to even out the contest, so the Black team cut short their warm up and entered the fray. Initially the Black team took over where the Golds had left off, again the forwards winning rucks and also scrums against the head to enable quick ball for the backs to run some great lines, supporting the ball carrier to score 2 great tries. Cambridge to their credit scored a good try to reduce the deficit as half time came.

Half time Cambridge 5 – 40 Ipswich

As the weather changed for the worst, so did the game. The game became very fragmented with constant interruptions. Cambridge scored another try from a quick tap penalty near our line to bring the score to 10-40. The Black team were playing great rugby but could not get a break in the third quarter, the constant sound of the referee’s whistle disrupting their flow and causing confusion for both sides.

The Gold team took over for the final quarter and fortunately the game started to flow again. Again, forwards and backs being on song allowing Ipswich to add a further 2 tries to the tally.

Final score Cambridge 10 – 50 Ipswich

The coaches were extremely happy with the performances of all of the squad, what great strength in depth we have. Also the attitude of the players when things were perceived to be going against us was first class and a great lesson for the players.
Well done to Harrison Mann who was the Gold teams ‘Golden Scrum Cap’ winner and to Kobe Bevan who, on debut, was deservedly the Black teams ‘Golden Scrum Cap’ winner.
