Ipswich arrived at an unbeaten Diss off the back of 2 very good performances and the coaches wanted them to again win their individual battles, to play smart around the ruck and to support the ball carrier at all times. The lads seemed to take this on board and the forwards were on the front foot from the start hitting the ruck hard when the ball was winnable and setting the backs free with quick ball. Ipswich raced in to a 15 point lead with a large Diss side barely able to enter our half. Against the run of play Diss scored 2 quick tries as Ipswich missed a few tackles and switched off at a penalty, allowing a Diss player to score in the corner after well taken quick tap.
Ipswich regrouped and were again on the front foot and added another 2 tries before the break, again the forwards combining well with a sharp back line who supplied the finishing touches to some great phase play.
Half time Diss 10 – 25 Ipswich
The coaches were delighted with the effort, tackling (against a larger team) and how smart they played around the ruck, not wasting energy on balls that they could not win. More of the same with more defensive line speed was the message.
The second half was a continuation of the first, forwards winning ball and the backs looking dangerous every time they had ball in hand. 6 unanswered tries followed in what was without doubt the best all round performance we have seen so far from the boys, even with a few injury re-shuffles Diss never threatened to score in the second half due to the commitment and determination shown by all.
Final score Diss 10 – 55 Ipswich
What was most pleasing for the coaches was that every single player contributed to the team effort and was as good as they could be on the day.
Well done to Rayburn who was the coaches ‘Golden Scrum Cap’ winner and to George who was nominated by Diss as their MOTM.
