Colchester Overcome Ipswich in Tense Cup Match

Colchester Overcome Ipswich in Tense Cup Match

David Woods3 Mar 2019 - 16:14

Better result needed against YM next week.

Ipswich Under 15s faced tough local rivals Colchester in the Suffolk Cup and dominated the early exchanges. Ryan Fosker came close on 6 minutes after a smart kick forward from Sam Donnelly just went forward from a hand to provide Colchester an easy exit from their own 22. Ipswich pressed again, driving forward and exploiting Colchester errors to gain a line out 5 metres out, Dantay Ward took a short ball and drove over to ground the ball on 15 minutes but the lineout throw had not gone 5 metres so the opportunity was lost. Ipswich had dominated the first quarter but Colchester started to play, driving forward and forcing Ipswich to tackle well to contain their dangerous attack. Colchester started to exploit the wind kicking deep into the Ipswich half gaining a good attacking scrum in the Ipswich 22. Good scrum ball was passed smartly right to a speedy winger who drove over to post the first try of the match to hosts Colchester on 21 minutes. Ipswich attacked from deep just before half time and after losing possession in their own 22 and creating a golden opportunity, Colchester scored a second try wide right on the stroke of half-time, when that was converted Colchester were 12 points up as the teams turned round in a half that Ipswich ought to have taken.

Colchester started the second period playing with real energy and confidence creating opportunities for fast runners to break forward with impunity. In 20 minutes they broke away 4 times to add to the score creating a 40 point cushion before Ipswich started to believe in themselves again. Ipswich were rucking better and retaining possession as the game moved into the final 5 minutes and it was only fitting that Sam Donnelly should break away and score a fine solo try which he converted to narrow the score to Colchester 40 Ipswich 7. Ipswich will no doubt rue some loose defensive work in a match that could have been much closer than it was. They face YM in the cup next week and will want to deliver a much better result there.
