It was a highly competitive match at Bury where the home side prevailed over a tough and committed Ipswich Under 15 side. Ipswich started brightly and Bury were strangely tentative in the opening exchanges with some great offensive defence from the Ipswich side with strong tackles across the line including a great turnover from Lysandro Ximinez. However, it was Bury that scored first against the run of play with a strong centre break and solo run in from 45 metres on 7 minutes. Ipswich undaunted, pressed forward with strong running across the midfield with Dantay Ward, Tom White and Josh Le Roux and some probing kicks from Sam Donnelly pressing the Bury defence back. However, it was against the run of play and on 22 minutes that Bury broke again with the same centre runner sprinting strongly 80 metres to breakaway for the second score of the game. Ipswich pressed again and their most telling attack came close to half-time when Ipswich broke on the narrow side and Jack Cottrell handed off strongly to round defenders and sprinted 50 metres being held up deep into the Bury 22 as the clock ran down. Two breakaways were the difference as Bury turned round 12 points to the good.
The second half remained tightly poised with Ipswich and Bury giving no quarter and defences very much on top. But Bury scored again when Ipswich were a man down after a player was lifted in the tackle. The Bury scrum was beginning to dominate creating a solid platform for them. So it was no surprise that a second Bury try in a well worked narrow side move from an attacking Bury scrummage. A final Bury try followed on the stroke of fulltime completing a somewhat flattering Bury scoreline for what turned out to be a very competitive and entertaining match. Ipswich coach PJ Jordan enthused, “we couldn’t have been prouder today, each and every one of you played your part in a highly competitive match against a very tough Bury side.” The final score was Bury St Edmunds 29 – Ipswich 0.
