Ipswich Under 15's got off to a winning start in the County Cup where they faced hosts Felixstowe, then Harwich and Dovercourt. They won 5-0 in the opener against Felixstowe and won 50-0 over Harwich. These results will set them up well for the next phase of the competition.
Felixstowe were a bulky side who scrummaged and tackled well to hold Ipswich out in the opening half, too often Ipswich opportunities were lost from handling errors, solo runners running into dense traffic and a half which was more stop than start as players found it difficult to adapt to the conditions. Finally, after 10 minutes of the second half Ipswich started to run the ball well in the backs to move the ball into space and attacked strongly before releasing Eli Govindasamy to post the opening and only score of a tight match. It was a deserved win but Ipswich had made heavy weather of it!
In the second match, against Harwich they started to play their normal game, attacking with verve and confidence from all over the park. This led to first half tries from Tom White (2), Josh Ball and Jake Hoskings and with a couple of Sam Donnelly conversions Ipswich were coasting and 24 points up at half time. The second period was more of the same with a Dantay Ward try after a jinky run from Fred Bolton playing at “10”, two Jake Hoskings catch-and-runs from full-back to score his second and third tries and a final try from returning Josh Le Roux to complete the touchdowns. With three conversions from Henry Williams that completed the scoring Ipswich 50 - Harwich 0.
Ipswich are now well poised to progress to the matches next week at Southwold where they face their hosts and Mistley.
