A bunch of old blokes played a spritely team of under 25s

A superb friendly, festive, frenzy of a game, for a bitterly cold, December afternoon. Played in excellent spirits by both teams. It warms the cockles of my heart.

Both teams suffered pre-Christmas attendance issues, with the Mighty fielding just 14 players and Felixstowe managing to pull in 10. We leant Felixstowe a couple of make this a 12-a-side game of pace (on their part) and patience (also on their part).

Tries were scored early by Ipswich, but we were unable to maintain our sterling, almost faultless (?!), performance of the first 5 minutes, as the average 20 year age gap was realised and the mornings hangovers drifted into afternoon naps.

As the game drew closer to full time, we agreed to cut the game a few minutes short, in order to get into the festive spirit early, hit the bar (where our heads were already waiting) and warm up. We agreed a "next try wins" ruling, as officiated by the referee and recognised as a legitimate rule of play by the RFU (?!?!). Ipswich chased a cheeky switch from the restart. We gained possession of the ball and stormed down the pitch, to be awarded a penalty. A quick 'tap and go' got us within cenitmeters of the try line, one more breakdown saw Arron Ludlam crash over the line to claim the "winning" try.

A great game had by all. Thank you to Felixstowe for hosting. We look forward to playing the return fixture in January.
