Good minutes under the belt for Jim Clark's boys

Ipswich opened their 3 match pre-season programme with a visit to local rivals Ipswich YM on Friday in front of a large crowd on Friday evening.

YM started the stronger winning the physical encounters resulting in a break way try after 22 minutes to give the hosts a 5-0 lead.

This galvanised the visitors into a raising their commitment levels, and as a result creating scoring opportunities, which were spurned due to inaccuracy in handling and decision making.

The game was far from a pre-season friendly with a couple of minor dockyard brawls breaking out, however to the credit of both teams discipline was regained by both teams as the half came to an end with no further scoring.

The second half saw a completely different level of physicality by the away side in both the tackle, breakdown defence and kick chase, coupled with accurate kicking games from scrum half Jake Steward and fullback/stand off Tim Mann.

The pressure began to pay off as after 2 minutes Ollie Garnham levels the scores following a line break from debutant full back Callum Murphy.
Ipswich defence held firm and greater continuity and accuracy resulted in a further 4 unanswered tries from Tim Mann, Callum Murphy, Alex Fane and a second from Ollie Garnham, of which all were converted by Murphy to give the visitors a 33pts to 5 win.

Jim Clark Head Coach will be pleased with the second half improvement and the experience gained from the young players experiencing senior rugby for the first time.

Ipswich next take on Sudbury RFC (Regional 1 Level 5) next Friday 12th August at Humber Doucy Lane kicking off at 7.30pm.
