IRFC launches Women's 2XV to cement complete player pathway for women and girls

IRFC launches Women's 2XV to cement complete player pathway for women and girls

Ellie Dodds22 Aug - 07:08

We’re proud to announce the launch of our Women’s 2nd XV, Ipswich Furies, to bridge our thriving girls' section to our senior set-up.

This is a landmark moment that cements our full women’s player pathway and expands opportunities for female players across Suffolk. The new side will provide a vital bridge between our thriving youth section and our established women’s 1st XV, the Ipswich Scorpions.

The move comes as the women’s game enjoys unprecedented momentum in the build-up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, which has inspired thousands of new players to join rugby clubs across England. We’re determined to ensure that local women and girls have the opportunity to be part of this historic growth.

“With two senior women’s sides now in place, every player has a home at Ipswich, from young girls picking up a rugby ball for the first time to those ready to step into competitive senior rugby,” said Michaela Taylor, Women and Girls Chair at IRFC. “The 2nd XV isn’t just about more matches, it’s about creating a complete, sustainable pathway for women’s rugby in Ipswich.”

A clear pathway: From first pass to senior rugby

We now offer a complete pathway for female players:

  • Youth rugby: welcoming girls into U12, U14 and U16 teams, focusing on fun, skills and confidence.
  • Transition to senior: young players moving up to adult rugby will now have the option of entering at a development level before progressing into first-team competition.
  • 1st team rugby: two women’s sides now provide opportunities for both developing players and performance-focused athletes, ensuring no one is lost from the game as they progress.

This structure provides a clear and supportive journey for every player, securing the long-term future of the women’s game at Ipswich.

A lasting legacy for Ipswich

The launch aligns with the RFU’s nationwide Impact ’25 legacy programme, which is investing in clubs, coaches and facilities to capitalise on the excitement of hosting the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. Our commitment ensures that the benefits of this historic tournament will be felt locally for years to come.

“We want Ipswich to be a hub for women’s rugby in Suffolk,” says Amanda Jones, Director of Women’s Rugby at IRFC. “The launch of our women’s 2nd XV shows that our club is ready not just to welcome new players, but to help them grow, develop and thrive at every stage of their rugby journey.”

Join the movement

We invite new and returning players of all abilities to get involved in this exciting new chapter.

Open training sessions will run at Ipswich Rugby Club (Humber Doucy Lane, IP4 3PZ) throughout September.
