Rio 2012/13 review

On a beautiful sunny day in May 2013 Ipswich rugby club hosted their inaugural Youth sevens festival.

The Idea behind the “Road to Rio 7s” was to give Ipswich’s youth their very own home festival and to coincide it with rugby’s return to the Olympic games in 2016. Rugby returns to the Rio games in the 7s format after a long absence.

Teams from all over eastern counties and a touring side from Biggleswade helped make the day a big success with some great open rugby on some fantastic playing surfaces. All five pitches were busy from 10am until the plate and cup finals at 15:30, with over 350 players from 13- 17 years old enjoying the Humber Doucy lane hospitality, and in true festival spirit the U15s visiting teams along with Ipswich joined forces to play as a Rio Barbarians side, giving more boys a chance to play and soak up the atmosphere.

Festival organiser Darren Wright said “I don’t think anyone  at Ipswich rugby club can quite believe how successful the day was. Many teams have already booked up for next years festival  which we will be opening up to all youth age groups over two days to cope with the demand. We have been very fortunate to have some great sponsors like Sackers recycling who even given the current climate always support this rugby club and make events like this possible”

There was also a visit from the East Anglian Air Ambulance which landed on the 1st xv pitch to pick up a cheque from Ipswich rugby club who made the EAAA their chosen charity at the beginning of the season

Rio 2013/14 review

Ipswich Rugby’s “Road to Rio 7s” festival has started to become a bit of a phenomenon in youth rugby circles.

It comes at the end of a very long season but for teams  all over Eastern Counties and beyond, its starting to become a must go to event. This years event, expanded to the Saturday and Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend saw over 600 players, male and female  from ages 12-17 including a touring side from Hitchin RFC take to the award winning Humber Doucy Lane pitches to celebrate all that’s good about the sport and there was some great open rugby on display.

Festival organiser Darren Wright said “We are celebrating rugby’s return to the Olympics games in the 7s format at Rio 2016 and this festival has become a bit of end of season bash for all involved. There is a great spirit and camaraderie at the “Rio 7s” and teams are already booking ahead for next seasons festival which will be held on May 2nd and 3rd.This year for the first time the Rio 7s featured a girls competition and because of the success and the increasing number of girls playing, this will be a regular addition”

Girls from Ipswich Rugby,Woodbridge,Diss and Colchester enjoyed the great weather and after playing some very competitive open rugby, combined their talents in a massive game of touch rugby.

Ipswich Rugby are continuing to run free open girls sessions on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer and for more details on this or how you can be part of the youth and juniors at Ipswich Rugby please contact Darren Wright at [email protected]
