Enfield Ignatians
Ipswich travelled to an in form Enfield hoping to carry on the good work of their last match where they scored freely. Enfield have their eyes firmly on a second place finish in the league so the stage was set in perfect conditions for a good contest.
The first half was keenly contested with the home side being awarded a penalty try –duly converted and Ipswich responding with a well worked move finished by (14) but unconverted. A further try for Enfield and a penalty for Ipswich saw the half time score of 12-8
The half time talk for Ipswich was about the real prospect of winning the game. However the result hinged on the first 10 minutes, where Ipswich’s (3) decided that Enfield shouldn’t be allowed the ball and the referee decided he should have a ten minute rest behind the posts. The ensuing scrum was a push over for the home side and at 19 -8 Ipswich’s hopes began to fade. However to their credit and fine leadership under (13) Ryan Potkins they put a massive effort together and managed to score a unconverted try by Chris Blom. Unfortunately this score came after yet another contentious refereeing decision the kind of which has beset Ipswich all season. The Enfield right wing received the ball at half way and kicked into space this then developed into a foot race between the kicker and the Ipswich left wing as the ball crossed the try line. Both sides claimed to have got there first but instead of asking the linesman he appeared to glean his decision from a local who was out for a walk nearby. Unsurprisingly the try was awarded to the outrage of travelling away side support. It ended the match as a contest.
The final whistle saw a score of 31-13 to the home side. Enfield the better side, Ipswich the fitter and getting better. Ipswich has no fear of relegation but they need more strength in depth in the forwards in order to unleash possibly the best back division in the league. If they do that they will be promotion candidates next season
