Colchester responded well, flanker George McGrannachan began a series of impressive charges, scrum-half Lee Clasby's kick to the corner was almost caught by wing Ed Merry, while centre Adam Cook made several thrusts into the visitors half. Referee Don Fisher made his mark at the start of the second half, flourishing yellow cards against Colchester's prop Gary Palmer, soon followed by Ipswich prop Nicholas Williams.
Ipswich scrum-half Ben Goodall made a 30 metre break, before Colchester countered with an overlap that saw full-back Pete Smith clear to the try-line only to be brought back for another knock on. The Ipswich backs showed no problems in moving the ball in attack, eventually creating an overlap for left-wing Colin Humphreys to twist his way over for a try that outside half Mark Broughton converted.
Colchester upped their game and were rewarded when centre Max Cochrane linked with wing Jon Vine, allowing Clasby to pick up from a scrum and run down the narrow side, drawing the Ipswich defenders before a well-timed pass to Vine freed him to cross wide left for Colchester's try. As time ran out, Ipswich used a penalty for a 60 metre kick at goal. The kick fell short and Colchester ran from defence. A reckless pass was intercepted by Broughton who setting up Humphreys for a try under the posts that Broughton then converted.
